First, What Does “Maintenance Dose” Mean?
The term gets used in two ways. In medication prescribing information, a maintenance dose is one you stay on after the initial dose increases. You may still be actively losing weight at that dose. When we talk about maintenance at Flow Wellness, we mean weight maintenance: what it takes to keep your results once you’ve reached your goal. How Do You Find Your Maintenance Dose?
Usually, we start by making sure your weight has been reasonably stable. Then, if it makes sense for you, we adjust your medication gradually and see what happens. That might mean lowering your weekly dose. It might mean spacing injections to every other week or, for some patients, even more spread out. It might also mean discovering that your current weekly dose is exactly what you need. There’s no way to know which plan will work best just by looking at the dose that got you to goal. We have to follow your response. We Look at More Than the Scale
Your weight trend matters, but it doesn’t tell us the whole story. We also pay attention to:- Hunger and food noise
- How you’re eating and whether you’re getting enough protein
- Side effects and how you feel
- Strength, activity, and body composition
- Changes in sleep, stress, hormones, or other health factors
What If Lowering Your Dose Doesn’t Work?
Then we adjust it. Finding maintenance isn’t a test you pass or fail. If hunger returns or your weight begins trending up, we’d rather catch it early and respond than wait until you’ve regained enough weight to feel like you’re starting over. Sometimes a small change is enough. Other times, staying on a higher dose is the better plan for you. What You Work on During Weight Loss Matters, Too
Your ability to lower your dose or space injections farther apart may depend on what you’ve addressed while taking the GLP-1. Medication can make weight loss easier, but it doesn’t automatically resolve everything that contributed to weight gain. For some people, that includes poor sleep, stress, emotional eating, or loss of muscle. For others, hormone changes, thyroid issues, sleep apnea, or another medication may be part of the picture. We look at those factors before reducing your GLP-1 support. If something is still working against you, lowering the dose may be harder than it needs to be. Addressing it during treatment gives you a better chance of finding a maintenance plan that works. Will You Need a GLP-1 Forever?
Maybe, maybe not. Some people stay on a GLP-1 long term because it helps them maintain their weight and they simply feel better while taking it. Others gradually lower their dose or stop and see how they do. Long-term treatment is a safe option when the medication continues to be beneficial and well tolerated. Weight regain after stopping is common. Healthy habits matter, but they don’t always replace the medication’s effect on appetite and weight regulation. That’s why we make a follow-up plan before you stop and pay attention to early changes, rather than waiting until you’ve regained a significant amount. There isn’t a chart that can tell us your perfect maintenance dose. We find it by making thoughtful changes, checking in, and paying attention to your weight, body composition, hunger, and how you’re actually living. If you’re approaching your goal weight, book an appointment with your provider. We’ll help you build a thoughtful maintenance plan that protects the progress you’ve worked for.Frequently Asked Questions
Is my maintenance dose the same as the dose I used to lose weight?
It can be. Some patients need the same dose to maintain their results. Others can lower it. We won’t know what works for you until we make a change and follow your response. Can I take injections less often during maintenance?
Possibly. Some patients do well with injections every other week or, even, monthly. Injectable semaglutide and tirzepatide are labeled for weekly use, so spacing injections farther apart is an individualized approach. How long does it take to find the right maintenance dose?
There’s no set timeline. We make changes gradually and give each adjustment enough time to see what happens to your hunger, weight trend, and body composition. Your needs can also change over time, so maintenance isn’t necessarily a decision we make once. What if I start gaining weight?
Tell your provider when you notice a trend, especially if hunger or food noise is returning too. We can reassess your dose and look at what else may be affecting your weight before a small change becomes a larger regain.Ready to Keep the Good Thing Going?
